Wausau had come to Martin Design in search of a showpiece to promote their line of Astrobrights paper to a corporate audience. Our goal: to illustrate — in the brightest way possible — just how effective these neon papers could be in corporate communications. The agency asked me for help in developing fictional companies for which we created fictional marketing pieces. I then wrote the copy for a collection of made-up ads, brochures, posters and collateral for these fictional companies. This unusual approach worked. Demand was so high, the first run of 65,000 brochures was snatched up in two months — a Wausau record. The paper company had to go back to press and print up 5,000 more.
